How to Clean Headphone Pads? Man, I’ve had these headphones for a long time now. Sadly, after so many years of use the pads have taken quite a beating. They are stained and look pretty bad… So I decided to give them a makeover with this upcycling tutorial!
How to Clean Headphone Pads?
If you follow these simple steps your headphone pads will be as good as new in no time. Let’s take a closer look:
1. First, remove the pads from your headphones
Make sure they are not connected to any wires before you begin working on them – this is very important!
2. Use a soft cloth or towel to clean them
Use only water and mild soap (such as hand dishwashing liquid). If cleaning an especially dirty pad, use something stronger like diluted laundry detergent. Remember not to use anything abrasive, including paper towels or tissues.
3. Soak the pads in warm water and mild soap for 10-15 minutes
The longer they soak, the more grime and oils may dissolve from the surface. If you’re a perfectionist you could also consider adding an oxygenated cleaner (like OxiClean) into the mix at this step – again be careful with any sort of chemical since it might damage your headphones!
4. Rinse with cold water until no more bubbles form on the surface of the pad
Use a clean cloth or towel to wipe out any remaining dirt once all bubbles have been removed from the solution.
5. Gently pat dry with a clean towel and allow to air dry overnight
Do not use any form of heat – like hair dryers or heated lamps. As tempting as it might be, I must insist that you do not put the pads in your microwave oven! You could melt them if you’re not careful…
6. Insert back into headphone cups and enjoy!
That’s all there is to it! Remember though, these steps will only work on soft pleather-padded headphones such as those found on earbuds and other small portable headsets.
