beyerdynamic DT 880

The DT 880 Edition sounds very neutral and relaxed. With its semi-open design, it allows some ambient noise to penetrate, but attenuates it somewhat stronger than in the case of a fully open headphone such as the DT 990 Edition. The bass reproduction penetrates very deeply, but is not overstated and enables lovers of jazz and classical music to really enjoy their favourite recordings thanks to its crystal clear sound. It’s so comfortable you can even wear them for hours on end without experiencing any pressure points.

The Beyerdynamic DT 880 Edition and the DT 880 PRO studio headset are identical when it comes to sound. Designed with both listeners at home and audio professionals in mind, they offer a full range of frequencies that is free from distortion. What makes them different is how they fit on your head–the Edition has a softer band for those lounging around their own homes, while the PRO’s band molds more tightly to your skull so as not to annoy you! Additionally, the PRO version ships with a coiled cable and an XLR input/output for professional use only. The Edition cord, however, is straight which can be used by anyone who wishes to enjoy music through clearer sound any time anywhere.

What makes them different is how they fit on your head – the Edition has an adjustable cotton headband that can move out of the way when lounging at home, while the PRO’s band contours to fit more snug against your skull so it doesn’t interfere with more concentrated work. Additionally, the PRO version ships with a coiled cable and XLR inputs/outputs for professional use only; while some pros might prefer these features over those available in the Edition models.

Buying Guide – How to Choose Best Beyerdynamic Headphone?

Open Vs Closed?

Open headphones are better than their closed counterparts. There is always some sound leakage and background noise when using a closed design, it’s irritating for the people around you (unless they are also listening to music) as well as distracting yourself from focusing on the music. The open-back model have no audio leakage at all, but tend to produce more external noise like background wind or room echo into your ears(there is not much but still some). Most audiophiles prefer open over closed headphone designs because of this reason, especially if you need to listen in quiet or public places.

Headphone Styles

On Ear –

These headphones sit on top of your ear. They offer great portability but at the cost of comfort since they don’t have any padding and can be hot to wear.

On-Ear / Over-Ear Combo –

Usually similar to on-ear headphone, this type is slightly bigger with more padding so that it can go over your ears instead of just sitting on them (like most on-ear phones). It kinda looks like a pair or hybrid between an in-ear headphone and over-the ears headphones from afar which makes them look unique IMO!

Over Ear (Full Size) –

This type of headphone covers the whole ear including the ear part. Unfortunately, they tend to be bulky and heavy but at least very comfortable for long term use.

In-Ear –

These are earbud headphones that are inserted into your ears instead of sitting on top or around them like most other headphones types do. They tend to be small (sometimes ridiculously small) and light weight but not as comfortable over long periods since you can feel the pressure from inside your ears as well as external noise leaking in from outside easily due to its open design compared with any other types besides on-ear phones which also suffer from these problems at a lesser degree. If you really want an in-ear headphone then I recommend picking up some “ear tip covers” or “earbud sleeves”. These are pieces of silicone you put inside the earbud. You can buy them from any store that sells in-ear headphones (they usually come bundled with them). It will add extra padding and help reduce external noise leaking into your ears as well as make the fit more comfortable over long periods.

Earplug / Canalphones –

This is a rare type of headphone design where it looks like a big pair of earplugs, although most aren’t actually made out of foam but some other material instead. They tend to have better isolation than on-ear or over-ear phones which makes them great for blocking outside sounds while still being comfortable over extended periods of time despite having one of the biggest driver size of all headphones at 10-30mm (usually 15 or 18).

In Ear Canalphones –

This is basically a canalphone that has a remote to control playback which is something that almost none of them have built in while most other types do come with it already. It’s not actually part of their model name, just something I’m adding in here because it seems like quite a few models are lacking this feature which seems odd to me. Without a 3.5mm remote you need to reach inside your pockets every time you want to raise the volume, pause/play songs etc so definitely not ideal for sports but perhaps better if you’re hiking or working out where having some wires dangling around your body might get in the way.

Wireless Headphones –

Like in-ear headphones, they usually suffer from some leakage because you can feel them pushing against your ear canal and some people claim that because of this design it leaks more sound than other types but I’m not too sure how true it is since my experience with wireless on-ear phones have been very good so far (@ low/medium volume levels). I only noticed leakage after cranking up the volume to max while using these headphones so just be aware of this if you like listening at high volumes. Also keep in mind that most (not all) wireless over-ears need an included battery pack which will add a bit of weight and size to them. In terms of convenience, I think over-ears are better than on-ears since you don’t have to worry about cables tangling and getting in the way but wireless on-ear phones are probably the best of all 3.

In Ear Monitors (IEMs) –

These are popular with musicians and audiophiles alike because they’re usually very detailed and accurate sounding. They tend to be more open than canalphones which means you can feel them pushing against your ear canal a little bit more easily in addition to extra external noise leaking into your ears (sometimes even at low volume levels). IMO, IEMs aren’t as well suited for long term listening as other types although I do recommend checking out some if you already have experience with headphones since I personally think they’re an entirely different beast with plenty of advantages/disadvantages to take into consideration. IEMs are usually made up of one or two earphones (with a single driver) that you insert into your ears which can be either hard silicone, foam or rubber.

Noise Isolating In Ear Monitors (IEMs) –

These are basically regular IEMs but the design has been altered slightly so that it will block out more external noise passively like on-ear headphones and in-ear/canalphones do actively by using a noise isolating method like fitting snugly or some other form of sealing against the outer part of your ear canal. Most cheaper IEMs don’t have this feature but some do (see below). Beyerdynamic’s Xelento series have a very cool design that brings noise isolating and open style headphones together.

3. What are Beyerdynamic Headphones??

They make a wide range of headphones including in-ear monitors, earbuds, canalphones and on-ear/over-ear open and closed headphone styles. Many are considered high end and targeted towards audiophiles or professionals although they do have some consumer level models as well since they’re also trying to appeal to the average person just looking for a good sounding pair of headphones. Generally speaking, Beyerdynamic is one of my favorite companies to deal with because their products tend to be amazing quality (especially the higher end models) but there’s always room for improvement. I hope this guide gives you more info about what different types/styles of Beyerdynamic Headphones are available and which might be the best choice for your situation.

5. Are Beyerdynamic Headphones worth it?

It depends on which model(s) you’re looking at and what the quality/features are of course but generally speaking, they do range from $100-$1,000+ depending on type, style and features. But in my opinion, I think they’re worth every penny although there ARE cheaper models that offer solid performance as well. In terms of bang for buck/performance to price ratio, other brands don’t seem to be able to come close unfortunately simply because most of their competitors tend to skimp out on things like comfort and quality just so they can sell more headphones (partly due to the ever expanding headphone market). However, Beyerdynamic still has plenty of room for improvement in some areas like comfort and build quality/durability which is why I do recommend sticking to the higher end models if you intend on owning them for a long time since they will likely last longer than their cheaper counterparts.
